Richie’s Anglers

Honorary Captain: Richard Wingate

Richie Wingate was born and raised in the Bronx.  As a boy, Richie loved the outdoors and especially fishing on City Island and the piers at Coney Island.

After graduating, Richie went to work at the fish market on Arthur Avenue, the true Little Italy of NYC.  Richie loved it and he was hooked on everything to do with salt water fishing and being on the water.  He started other very successful businesses through the years, but his heart was always on the water and he continued to fish City Island and anywhere else he could throw in a line.

While Richie loved to fish, his true pride and joy was his wife Lynn and his sons Richard and Michael. He loved spending quality time with family, whether it was during the holidays or out on the boats.  Richie always made sure to make every moment with his family was a memorable one.

After retiring from a successful painting business, Richie would once again follow his passion for fishing. He acquired Al's Tackle Shop on Lincoln Avenue in Pelham in 1995. He loved helping fishermen young and old, telling fishing stories, and putting smiles on customer’s faces.

He operated the tackle store until he succumbed to glioblastoma in June 2021. Richie was excited when Lynn told him she wanted to keep the store open after he passed, and she has worked hard to keep it successful. If you are trying to reel’em in, come by the shop!!  It’s the place to go if you are heading out on the water!

Richie will be remembered as a funny, loving, dedicated and awesome person. He loved people, especially his family. He was a charmer, especially to his wife whom he loved and adored.

Richie would have love rooting on the Anglers, so let’s hope the team brings home a trophy just like Richie would have done on a day out on the water!!
